Man of the Moment, by Alan Ayckbourn, 24 February-1 March 1997, directed by Ray Riches. Set built by Jim Crossley.
The play features a swimming pool deep enough to swim (and drown!) in. Jim constructed a pool, 12′ long and 4′ deep, 8′ wide at its longest edge, tapering down to 4′. The quantity of water required to fill the pool weighed approximately 9 tonnes, and had to be heated by a radiator dropped into the pool, running off the theatre’s central heating system. It is doubtful many other amateur societies would be so ambitious (foolhardy?), as to attempt something similar. One can only imagine the consequences for the audience if there had been a catastrophic failure!
