One of Shakespeare’s most popular works, this play combines lyricism, comedy, magic and love in an enchanting and spectacular way. Four young lovers wander through the midsummer forest in a dreamlike state brought on by the magical mischief of Puck from the fairy world of Titania and Oberon. At the same time in the wood, a group of amateur actors are rehearsing a play as an entertainment for the wedding of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta. Bottom, one of the actors, falls victim to another of Puck’s spells when his head is transformed into that of an ass. Mayhem ensues so that the lovers think that they must be dreaming and Puck sums it all up with, “Lord, what fools these mortals be!”
