By Lillian Hellman, directed by Jenny Gore

The play is set in the thirties, in a rural all-girls’ boarding school, run by two women. A mischievous and frequently disobedient student, Mary, runs away from the school and to avoid being sent back she tells her doting grandmother that the two women are having a lesbian affair.

Her grandmother, a significant member of the community, withdraws Mary and persuades all the other parents to do likewise causing the school to close which has tragic consequences for the two women.

The play, which is based on a true story, is about the powerful, corrosive effect of a malicious lie and how witch hunts can destroy lives. It was a shocking play for its time, challenging the views of contemporary American Society and making a profoundly moving, dramatic story.
