SUMMARY:Bazaar and Rummage
DESCRIPTION:By Sue Townsend\, directed by Gil Burns \nIn Sue Townsend’s heartfelt comedy\, three severely agoraphobic women have left their houses for the first time in years\, and made it to a jumble sale. The sale has been organised by their social workers\, the young trainee Fliss and the ex-agoraphobic volunteer\, Gwenda. \nAs Margaret\, Bell-Bell and Katrina prepare to meet the public\, armed with the suits of a deceased husband\, old sequinned show dresses\, a standard lamp\, and other bric-a-brac\, nerves run high\, but a sensitive portrait of the group emerges. \nBazaar and Rummage was first presented in 1982 at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs\, London. \n

SUMMARY:Theft

But when he is eventually unmasked as the thief\, Spriggs reveals he knows a number of uncomfortable truths that will undermine two seemingly happy marriages and one formerly strong friendship. \nTheft is another hit comedy by prolific writer\, Eric Chappell\, author of Rising Damp and numerous stage plays.

SUMMARY:Witness for the Prosecution
DESCRIPTION:By Agatha Christie\, directed by Steve Hirst \nLeonard Vole is in the dock for the murder of Emily French\, a wealthy older woman. Unaware that he was a married man\, Miss French had made him her principal heir\, and apparently harboured hopes of marriage. Everything seems to point to Leonard’s guilt\, and his situation becomes even more desperate when Leonard’s wife\, Romaine\, agrees to testify – not in his defence\, but as a witness for the prosecution. \nThe play is adapted from a Christie short story\, and was one of her personal favourites. \n

SUMMARY:The 39 Steps
DESCRIPTION:By Patrick Barlow\, directed by Ray Riches \nWinner of the Olivier Award for Best Comedy\, in 2007\, Patrick Barlow’s play is based on the Buchan novel and Hitchcock film\, about adventurer Richard Hannay\, who is forced to go on the run from an international spy ring\, at the outbreak of the First World War. \nIn this spoof version\, all the characters are played by four actors\, who portray between 100 and 150 roles\, even doubling parts within the same scene. These quick changes are achieved by cunning use of props and costume\, contributing to the general hilarity. Further humour comes from the ingenious use of props – to represent trains and planes on stage\, in a variety of unexpected ways!

SUMMARY:Light Music for Summertime
DESCRIPTION:With happy memories of last year’s concert\, Hebden Bridge Little Theatre Choir will again welcome the Chris Irvin Concert Orchestra from Leeds\, to share an evening of cheerful nostalgia\, and the brilliant tunes of previous generations. \nIf you relish the stirring songs of the first World War\, long to gather lilacs in English Country Gardens – Linden Lea or a Monastery Garden\, perhaps – come to the Little Theatre on Saturday 7 July\, at 7.30pm. It’s a free concert\, as was last year’s\, with donations welcome. \nThere’s evidence that popular favourites of parents and grandparents can appeal to children hearing them for the first time; the evening will also enable youngsters to see orchestral instruments being played at close quarters. \nChris Irvin\, who suggested ten years ago that the Little Theatre might enjoy having its own choir\, is also M.D. for the orchestra\, and has composed new pieces for its concerts\, in venues ranging from Open Gardens to shopping malls\, churches and care homes. \nIf you’d like to join us\, for a pleasant evening’s entertainment\, please ring Chris to reserve your seat (01422 844744). There is no admission charge.

SUMMARY:Lovesong
DESCRIPTION:By Abi Morgan\, directed by Mike Bellenie \nThe playwright\, Abi Morgan\, and celebrated theatre company\, Frantic Assembly\, collaborated on this unforgettable love story\, about the 40-year marriage of Maggie and Billy\, as Maggie’s illness threatens to end it. Past and present collide. The kitchen and bedroom of Maggie and Billy’s house\, where the walls were never scribbled on by longed-for children\, are stalked by the ghosts of their younger selves: the smooth-skinned\, radiant Margaret and William. An old woman walks into the wardrobe and a young woman walks out. An elderly man dances with the memory of his young wife; a young man makes love to the woman his new wife will eventually become. \nLovesong is a radical departure for the Little Theatre\, as the production will feature the unique choreography\, for which Frantic Assembly is famous.

SUMMARY:Social Play Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The next play for the Social Play Reading Group will be a saucy comedy\, Chase Me Up Farndale Avenue\, s’il vous plaît! by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jnr. The French farce has arrived at the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society\, and the formidable ladies do it like no one else! An unintelligible plot\, a plethora of doors and a grand range of characters make this Farndale offering as bubbly as a glass of champagne. If you have ever seen any of the other Farndale Avenue Housing Estate plays and enjoyed them\, you will appreciate this style of ‘coarse theatre’ and  the comedy which results from theatre done badly on purpose. Everyone is welcome to read or just listen. \nThe SPRG meets to read this jolly romp\, on Wednesday\, 4 April\, at 7.30pm\, in the Little Theatre.

SUMMARY:Social Play Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The next play chosen by the Social Play Reading Group\, A Night Out\, by Harold Pinter\, has a very topical theme. Pinter’s first big success on television\, featuring many of his trademark themes and stylistic techniques\, is a tale of  a young loner\, dominated by an emotionally suffocating mother. \nFinally rebelling\, he goes along to an office party\, but things start to go wrong when he is accused of molesting a female colleague. \nThe SPRG meets to read this early modern classic on Wednesday\, 7 March\, at 7.30\, in the Little Theatre.

Mary ends up in a Mother and Baby Home\, in the north of England\, where she meets other young women in a similar predicament. Despite the dawning realisation that their babies are to be given up for adoption\, the girls’ youthful exuberance breaks through\, as they sing along to the songs of the period – by girl groups such as the Ronettes\, and the Shangri-Las.

SUMMARY:Social Play Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The Social Play Reading Group will be reading Me and My Friend by Gillian Plowman\, on Wednesday\, 7 February. \nThis ‘hilarious and heart-breaking’ black comedy explores the relationship between two ‘odd’ couples thrown prematurely out of hospital care. In the downstairs flat are Oz\, who has never recovered from his mother’s death\, and Bunny\, whose workaholism led to estrangement from his wife. Upstairs are Robin\, a middle-class housewife who suffocated her own son\, and Julia whose obsessive thoughts of men drew her into prostitution. In the first act we see the men conduct fantasy interviews for jobs they will never get\, then in the second act\, the women trying to make plans for a holiday. They all meet when Oz throws a disastrous party with the four desperately attempting the niceties of social intercourse. \nIf you like reading plays aloud\, or would like to just listen – please join us! \nPlowman’s writing is rich in affectionate humour…The Times…a remarkable play…The Sunday Telegraph…what good theatre should be …What’s On.

SUMMARY:Social Play Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The SPRG plans another reading of Pyrenees by David Greig\, on Wednesday 6 December\, at 7.30pm in the Little Theatre bar. In this intriguing play\, a man found lying in the snow at the base of the Pyrenees\, suffering from amnesia\, is confronted by two women who offer alternative stories about his identity. There was such disagreement among the readers who were there in November about the true identities of the characters\, we are inviting Little Theatre members to come along\, read or listen and help us solve the puzzle. If you are good at accents (eg. a slight Scottish lilt\, or the accent of a person speaking English who might have been born in France)\, this is an opportunity to have some fun and help us solve the mystery.

SUMMARY:RolePlay
DESCRIPTION:By Alan Ayckbourn\, directed by Ray Riches \nJustin and Julie-Ann\, hopelessly mismatched in love\, are about to introduce their respective parents to each other over dinner – Justin’s upper-crust alcoholic mother from Surrey and Julie-Ann’s bigoted Yorkshire father and prim mother. \nEnter Paige Petite\, a former lap-dancer with suicidal tendencies\, who appears on their balcony having dropped from the flat above\, followed shortly after by the thick\, gun-toting minder employed by her violent boyfriend! \nThis is the third in the Damsels in Distress trilogy\, by Alan Ayckbourn. Although part of a trilogy\, each play stands alone. The director Ray Riches previously directed GamePlan\, the first of the series\, in 2007\, and is delighted to get the chance to direct RolePlay: ‘RolePlay is very funny! The humour comes from an array of larger than life characters\, heightened by the sense of peril in which our hapless heroine finds herself. All this combines to hilarious effect!’ \n‘returns to vintage Ayckbourn territory\, the dinner party from hell’ Paul Taylor\, The Independent

SUMMARY:Proof

Feeling vulnerable she worries that she has inherited Robert’s inclination towards mental instability\, as well as his maths genius. \nInto the equation comes Hal\, an ex-student of her father’s\, who wants to study the hundreds of notebooks left behind after his death\, looking for any work that could be published. \nCatherine assures him that the notebooks are filled with scribbles and nonsense as her father wrote them when he was at his most delusional. But then Hal makes a sensational discovery that threatens to turn everyone’s world upside down! \nProof won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play. \n‘In Proof\, David Auburn has fashioned an exhilarating and assured play – a subtle and gripping exploration of loss\, guilt\, discovery\, instability\, and\, ultimately\, the elusive nature of truth.’
